How does In-floor Heating work?
Hydronic radiant in-floor heating uses hot water circulated through a network of tubes embedded beneath the flooring to provide even, energy-efficient heat. Here’s an overview of the process:
Boiler/Water Heater:
- The system starts with a boiler or water heater that heats water to a set temperature (usually between 80-130°F).
Pump & Manifold Distribution:
- A pump circulates the heated water through a manifold, which distributes it into multiple zones.
- 2. Each zone can have its own thermostat for customized temperature control.
Piping Network (PEX Tubing):
- Flexible PEX tubing is laid in loops beneath the flooring (in concrete slabs, under subfloors, or between joists).
- This tubing is spaced evenly to ensure consistent heat distribution across the floor.
Heat Transfer to Floor:
- As hot water flows through the tubing, heat radiates upward into the floor material (tile, wood, or concrete).
- The warm floor then radiates heat throughout the room.
Temperature Regulation:
- Thermostats monitor the temperature in each zone, adjusting the water flow to maintain comfort.
- When the desired temperature is reached, the boiler shuts off, and the water cools as it recirculates back to the heater.
Energy Efficiency:
- Hydronic radiant systems are energy-efficient since they rely on low-temperature water and eliminate the need for forced air, reducing heat loss.
